Alvar Aalto

precedent study 2007

The second week of precedent research for a 4th year design course looked at historical architects. A partner and I selected Finnish designer and architect, Alvar Aalto. An innovator and leader of human-centered, modernist designs. Aalto was the naturaliser and the humaniser, creating award-winning buildings, and timeless pieces of furniture and interiors. This includes the Paimio Tuberculosis Sanatorium, the Villa Mairea, Saynatsalo Town Hall, Finlandia Hall, and the well-known Paimio Chair and Savoy Vase.

The structure of the course was a sort co-education model, where students had one week to research and build a presentation of their findings on different designers or architects, and present those findings to the other students in the class in 10 minutes. The following presentation consists of 17 image-focused slides.
