Design Analysis Study 2007

Following methods of Participatory Design, we partnered with a business in downtown Vancouver to solve a design problem they had identified. The problem was an ineffective website. Through conducting our study in phases: Initiation, In-Line Analysis, In-Depth Analysis, and Innovation, we were able to identify the root of the problem, and propose a solution that would meet their needs. In the end, the company was thrilled, and implemented most of our recommendations.

phase presentations

The following presentations were given during the class session held once a week, to update the professor and other students, on our progress. At the beginning of the course, my team of 4 partnered with SeaBreeze Power to help solve their design problem, following techniques put forth in "Participatory IT Design" by Bødker, Kensing, and Simonsen.

Initiation Phase

We contacted and scheduled the first meeting with the company, identified stakeholders, established a steering committee, and mapped out a baseline plan, including scheduled meetings, interviews, workshops, and presentations for the duration of the project.

Strategic Alignment/In-line Analysis Phase

We ensured the project was in-line with the company's business and IT strategy, and defined and prioritized our project focus and domain. We created and submitted the Strategic Alignment Report, which focused on the Environment (potentials, needs, requirements, and conditions), Business Strategy (goals, processes, challenges, and problems), and Work Domains (definition, characterization, discussion) of the company.

In-Depth Analysis Phase

We gathered data and information through in-situ interviews and participatory workshops. We created the In-Depth Analysis Report, which discussed the backdrop and focus, work practice characteristics, goals, problems, needs, and ideas for solutions, and suggested priorities.

Innovation Phase

During the final phase of the project, we focused on developing the ideas that had surfaced after completing the earlier phases. We produced a final report outlining our Visions for Change, Implementation Strategy and Plan, and our Recommendations and Priorities. We ensured our proposal met the goals and needs we had identified in the Initiation Phase, through an analysis of advantages, disadvantages, consequences, and cost of implementation.

final presentation

The design process led us to a final presentation with the company. Our proposal included an analysis of the process of updating and maintaining the website, after identifying the problem: a lack of communication within the company with regards to the website. They didn't need a fancy new design for their site, what they needed was an organized way of managing the website. We proposed a solution with more integrated web responsibilities, or the hiring of a dedicated webmaster. We also provided a new site architecture map for them to resolve the confusing navigation structure, and a few mock-ups of what a redesigned site could look like.

final report

The following report outlines the general design proposal, as submitted to the company.
